UK Spanish Textbook Criticized for Example Sentence About Defending Transgender Rights

A GCSE Spanish revision guide published by the British company Pearson has been criticized for including an example sentence mentioning the defense of transgender rights. According to PinkNews , the Edexcel GCSE Spanish Higher textbook featured the phrase “he/she fights/fought for transgender rights” among examples of how to describe a person one admires. Other examples included helping others and being a good role model.

Helen Joyce, director of advocacy at the organization Sex Matters, called this example evidence of “subtle indoctrination of children in schools,” pointing out that it was the only one among all suggested phrases that was not phrased vaguely. In response to the criticism, representatives of Pearson stated that the phrases in the textbook are merely examples for developing communication skills in real-world contexts, not required responses to be memorized. The publisher also emphasized that it regularly reviews its content to ensure it aligns with UK education standards.
