Illinois governor signs three transgender rights bills on Pride parade day
On 28 June 2026, Illinois Governor JB Pritzker signed three bills expanding transgender rights in the state, hours before joining the Chicago Pride parade.
As CBS Chicago reports , the first bill — HB 5095 — enshrines the right of transgender people to self-select their gender marker (male, female, or “X”) on state IDs. The second — HB 5492 — requires insurance companies to cover up to six months of prescribed hormone therapy. Both laws take effect on 1 January 2027. The third bill — HB 4834 — takes effect immediately: it removes testosterone from the state’s prescription drug monitoring database (ILPMP) and prohibits the addition of estrogen, mifepristone, and misoprostol. The law is intended to prevent the database from being used to restrict access to gender-affirming and reproductive healthcare.
“Today I am proud to sign landmark legislation expanding my administration’s work to make Illinois a safe, empowering and inclusive place for the LGBTQ+ community,” Pritzker wrote on social media.
