Malaysian Minister Names Work Stress as a Cause of Homosexuality

Malaysia’s Minister of Religious Affairs, Zulkifli Hasan, has stated that work-related stress, social environment, and a lack of religious practice can contribute to the development of homosexuality. He made these remarks in a written response to a parliamentary inquiry, citing a 2017 study.

Mainstream medical and psychological organizations do not support the idea that stress or external environment can change a person’s sexual orientation. According to current scientific consensus, these factors do not cause homosexuality.

In addition, the minister noted in his response that between 2022 and 2025, Malaysian authorities recorded 135 arrests or prosecutions related to LGBT activity. Same-sex relationships remain illegal in the country.
