Middle East Release of Marvel’s Wolverine Reportedly Censors Mystique’s Lesbian Marriage

Players across the Middle East have documented apparent censorship in the newly released superhero action video game Marvel’s Wolverine, developed by Insomniac Games for the PlayStation 5. Regional copies of the game reportedly remove or alter in-game references to the lesbian marriage and romance between the shapeshifting mutant Mystique and crime lord Tyger Tiger. The regional changes were reported in late September 2026 by LGBTQ Nation, drawing on reporting from gaming outlets and social media evidence shared by players.

Reports of the edits first gained traction on Reddit and X (formerly Twitter), where players from countries including Lebanon shared comparison screenshots and video clips. According to the footage, a framed photograph depicting Mystique and Tyger in wedding gowns appears blurred or replaced with an empty frame, an in-game love letter is redacted, and spoken dialogue mentioning Mystique’s “wife” is muted while background audio continues to play. In the game’s subtitles, the word “wife” is replaced with asterisks. Observers pointed out that the preservation of ambient sounds during muted lines indicates intentional audio editing rather than an accidental glitch.

Publisher Sony Interactive Entertainment and developer Insomniac Games have not publicly commented on the reports or specified which regional territories received altered copies. Industry analysts note that major game studios frequently modify LGBTQ+ content to satisfy regulatory standards and commercial licensing requirements in Middle Eastern countries, where same-sex relationships remain criminalized. A similar adjustment occurred in 2023 with the release of Marvel’s Spider-Man 2, when Pride flags were removed and a side mission featuring a gay teenage couple was rewritten for distribution in Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates.

Mystique (Raven Darkhölme) debuted in Marvel Comics in 1978 and has long been written with a fluid romantic identity. In canon comics, her most enduring relationship is with the precognitive mutant Destiny (Irene Adler), whom she married in the mainstream Earth-616 continuity. Marvel’s Wolverine is the first major standalone video game focused on Wolverine developed exclusively for current-generation hardware.
