On October 19, 2026, Dutch Prime Minister Rob Jetten and his fiancé, Argentine field hockey player Nicolás Keenan, announced that they are expecting their first child in the spring of 2027. The couple shared a joint statement on social media, revealing that the pregnancy was made possible with the help of a close friend who offered to serve as an altruistic surrogate mother, alongside an acquaintance egg donor.
According to a statement released by Democrats 66 (D66), the entire in vitro fertilization (IVF) procedure was conducted in the Netherlands in strict compliance with Dutch law. The surrogate mother, a Dutch woman named Lisa who already has children with her partner, is a longtime friend of Jetten and Keenan. The egg donor is also a Dutch acquaintance. The statement emphasized that the arrangement is entirely non-commercial, as commercial surrogacy is strictly prohibited under Dutch law. The couple chose to announce the pregnancy publicly to prevent uncontrolled press leaks as the pregnancy progresses, while calling for privacy for all parties involved.
“Someone very special is on the way. See you in 2027, little one,” wrote Jetten and Keenan. “There are no words big enough to thank our egg donor, our surrogate mum Lisa and both their families. None of this would be possible without you.” Lisa shared that she gladly chose to help close friends achieve their dream of fatherhood. The prime minister plans to take a brief parental leave around the birth before resuming his official duties. The 29-year-old Keenan, who plays for The Hague-based club Klein Zwitserland and the Argentina national team, has coordinated his athletic commitments to balance sport with fatherhood. The couple has been engaged since November 2024; their wedding, initially scheduled for August 2026, was postponed due to intense work schedules.
The 39-year-old Rob Jetten has led the social-liberal D66 party since 2023, having previously served as Minister for Climate and Energy Policy in Mark Rutte’s cabinet before becoming prime minister. Within Dutch politics, Jetten has often drawn sharp criticism from right-wing and conservative parties. Conservative opponents have frequently targeted his progressive green agenda, where multi-billion-euro climate transition packages earned him the critical moniker “Climate Robje” (Klimaat-Robje), with critics arguing that his environmental policies impose disproportionate financial burdens on domestic industries, farmers, and household budgets.
Surrogacy and same-sex parenthood have also previously embroiled Jetten in political controversy. In early 2025, during an appearance on the television program Casa di Beau, Jetten lamented the hurdles facing gay male couples seeking to start a family, noting that foreign adoption had largely halted due to historical abuses, commercial surrogacy in the United States costs around $150,000, and Dutch law bars intended parents from actively seeking a surrogate mother in public. His comments drew fierce pushback from right-wing figures. Notably, Forum for Democracy (FvD) MP Gideon van Meijeren accused Jetten of making an unlawful disguised solicitation and argued that surrogacy undermines the maternal bond, reducing women to instruments and treating children as commercial products.
Earlier, Uránia reported extensively on a sociological study in the Netherlands that documented a decline in acceptance of homosexuality among Dutch students, which Jetten attributed to social media algorithms and radical ideologies, as well as the resignation of German conservative politician Jens Spahn following intra-party backlash over having a child via surrogacy.
