In October 2026 in Mississippi, a contentious public debate surfaced in the U.S. Senate race over the position of Democratic nominee and local District Attorney Scott Colom regarding medical procedures for transgender minors. According to recorded footage published by Breitbart News, the candidate stated that he personally opposes gender-transition surgeries for children and supports civil prohibitions against such operations, but firmly opposes criminal prosecution and imprisonment of healthcare providers.

The undercover video captured a conversation between Colom and an undercover reporter asking about a 2021 collective statement coordinated by Fair and Just Prosecution, a network of reform-minded prosecutors. Signed by more than 75 U.S. prosecutors and sheriffs, the document urged law enforcement agencies not to expend limited criminal justice resources on prosecuting doctors or families pursuing healthcare protocols for transgender youth. Colom noted that he did not author the multi-page letter and could not recall every specific clause from years prior, but reaffirmed his core legal position: medical procedures agreed upon between families and healthcare professionals should not be handled as criminal offenses, and criminalizing healthcare decisions undermines public trust.

Scott Colom, who has served as District Attorney for Mississippi’s 16th Judicial District since 2016, is challenging incumbent Republican Senator Cindy Hyde-Smith in the November general election. The 2021 prosecutor letter previously sparked political clashes between the two when Hyde-Smith utilized the Senate’s “blue slip” tradition in 2023 to block Colom’s nomination by President Joe Biden to a federal district judgeship. While the incumbent campaign has frequently attacked Colom over gender-related topics, his senate platform focuses primarily on economic development, judicial reform, and securing funding for struggling rural healthcare facilities.

Fair and Just Prosecution is a national network of elected prosecutors promoting criminal justice reform, alternatives to incarceration, and reallocating law enforcement resources toward addressing serious violent crime.

Transgender rights and healthcare governance remain prominent issues in the 2026 U.S. midterm elections: previously, Uránia reported on conservative criticism of North Carolina congressional candidate Jamie Ager over a farm festival featuring drag performers, legislative battles in Kansas concerning gender markers on state-issued identification, a campaign advertisement by North Carolina Democratic Representative Don Davis regarding restrictions in women’s sports, and internal deliberations within the Democratic Party regarding LGBTQ+ policies in rural swing districts.
