In October 2026 in North Carolina, a heated cultural controversy emerged in the competitive race for the U.S. House of Representatives surrounding Democratic candidate and local farmer Jamie Ager. According to reporting by conservative outlet Breitbart News, political opponents highlighted that his family enterprise, Hickory Nut Gap Farm in Fairview, hosted a family-friendly fantasy festival in May 2019 featuring the local chapter of the satirical drag charity troupe Sisters of Perpetual Indulgence.

The six-hour “Fantasy Festival at the Farm” was promoted by organizers as a family gathering featuring interactive games, youth costume contests for children aged 12 and under, and discounted tickets for minors. In promotional announcements, farm organizers specifically welcomed members of the Beer City Sisters, describing them as “altruistic 21st-century nuns” who spread joy and dismantle social stigma through irreverent humor and self-expression. Conservative commentators pointed to members’ camp stage pseudonyms (such as “Sister Domina Trix” and “Sister Helen Bedd”), the group’s regular comedy drag shows at local venues, and a recent $5,000 contribution made by Ager’s campaign to regional LGBTQ+ organization Blue Ridge Pride in the third quarter of 2026.

Jamie Ager, a fourth-generation Fairview farmer, has campaigned across North Carolina’s 11th Congressional District as a moderate “mountain Democrat,” centering his platform on recovery from Hurricane Helene, agricultural resilience, and bipartisan economic measures. He faces Republican state Representative Jennifer Balkcom, who was selected as the GOP nominee after incumbent Representative Chuck Edwards withdrew his reelection bid amid a House Ethics Committee inquiry. While the mountain district has historically tilted conservative, political analysts rate the contest as a toss-up, with Ager holding a significant campaign fundraising advantage over his opponent.

The Sisters of Perpetual Indulgence was founded in San Francisco in 1979 as an activist and charitable organization. Its members use flamboyant drag depictions of Catholic nuns and white face paint to raise funds for HIV/AIDS care, support LGBTQ+ advocacy, and promote civil rights, drawing frequent opposition from religious and conservative critics who consider their aesthetic disrespectful toward Christian traditions.

Cultural debates surrounding LGBTQ+ topics remain prominent in the 2026 U.S. midterm elections: previously, Uránia reported on a television advertisement by North Carolina Democratic Congressman Don Davis supporting restrictions in women’s sports, Donald Trump’s speech criticizing former Ohio Senator Sherrod Brown over grants for children’s drag readings, and discussions within the Democratic Party regarding LGBTQ+ platforms in rural swing districts.
