In October 2026, during a campaign rally in Youngstown, Ohio, 47th U.S. President Donald Trump commented on the appearance and athletic role of Indiana Fever guard Sophie Cunningham while discussing debates over transgender women participating in female sports divisions. According to the American LGBT outlet LGBTQ Nation, the remarks took place during a Republican campaign event ahead of the November congressional midterm elections.

Addressing sports regulations and criticizing former Ohio Democratic Senator Sherrod Brown, Trump spoke to former NFL head coach Jon Gruden in the audience. The president asked Gruden if he had ever sought to include a woman on one of his championship teams before mentioning Cunningham: “We like Sophie Cunningham. A lot of men want to go and watch her, she’s beautiful! But you’re not allowed to say that anymore, however, as a politician. Please, please, let me take it back. Anytime a politician says a woman is beautiful, that’s generally the end of his political career.” Continuing his thought, Trump added: “Sophie is a beautiful young woman. You probably wouldn’t mind her on the team—not to help you with points, but to help you with attendance. The attendance would be great.”

Trump’s remarks sparked broad discussion across U.S. media and the sporting community. Commentators from liberal and LGBT outlets pointed out an apparent contradiction between Republican messaging—which frames the party as the foremost defender of women’s sports against “gender ideology”—and remarks that reduced a female athlete’s worth to her physical appearance and appeal to male spectators, downplaying her athletic record. In contrast, conservative commentators viewed Trump’s statement as typical rally banter satirizing modern political correctness, noting that Cunningham’s rising prominence has undeniably drawn increased commercial and public interest to women’s basketball. Cunningham has not commented publicly on the remarks.

Sophie Cunningham has played in the WNBA since 2019. During the 2026 season with the Indiana Fever, she served as a key rotation player, averaging 7.9 points per game and shooting 41.9% from three-point range (among the league’s top marks). She gained significant visibility among conservatives after publicly voicing opposition to the inclusion of transgender women in female sports categories.

The participation of transgender athletes remains a prominent theme in the 2026 midterm campaigns: previously, Uránia reported on Trump’s address at the same Youngstown rally, where he criticized former Senator Sherrod Brown over funding for drag queen story hours and commented on Senator Jon Husted’s athletic build. Additionally, Uránia covered controversies surrounding high school volleyball in Colorado and North Carolina Congressman Don Davis running campaign ads supporting female sports restrictions.
